When it comes to oral health, there are several different structures inside the mouth that all contribute toward keeping things healthy and functional. However, certain conditions that might not always seem serious can sometimes cause problems if they aren’t identified and treated. One of these conditions is called a lip tie; keep reading to learn a little more about this issue and why it’s worth treating, especially in younger children.

Why Lip Ties Need to Be Treated

To put it simply, a lip tie is a condition where the skin of the upper lip, a connective tissue known as the frenum, is attached to the gums in an unfavorable way that prevents proper lip movement. A lip tie, even if it doesn’t seem very severe, can lead to all sorts of health complications. Here are just a few of the problems that might ensue if your child doesn’t receive professional treatment for their lip tie:

  • Dental and orthodontic issues – A severe lip tie often leads to tooth decay in children, since it allows additional bacterial buildup. This can also lead to gum recession, as well as the possibility of a gap between the two front teeth. Even bite problems can develop!
  • Poor nutrition – Since lip ties can negatively impact an infant’s ability to properly latch during breastfeeding, the issue can lead to poor nutrition. The impact that lip and tongue ties have on breastfeeding is one of the most well-known complications that can arise. As they get older, affected children might encounter trouble eating some foods since they’ll struggle to manipulate their lips when chewing.
  • Speech issues – Many children develop air management issues or trouble with articulation due to their limited range of motion. This can also make it difficult for your child to navigate social situations.
  • Sleep issues – It’s possible that sleep apnea or other breathing disorders can develop as a result of lip and/or tongue ties.

How Lip Ties Are Treated

If you suspect your child has a lip tie, you shouldn’t hesitate to get them the care they need, given that the issue can cause some pretty unfavorable circumstances. Fortunately, lip ties, tongue ties, and other related issues can easily be addressed with professional assistance. One common procedure is a frenectomy, which is a quick process that allows your child’s dentist to safely alter and reshape the frenum as needed, using a special laser tool.
